– Susan Mensah
Susan Mensah, was born in London as the second child to Ghanaian parents and raised amidst the vibrant cultures of the United Kingdom, Ghana, and Zambia. A self-taught artist of Ghanaian descent, inspired by the rich tapestry of African beauty since childhood, Susan demonstrated a natural talent for painting and drawing from an early age. However, it wasn’t until later in life that art became a more profound pursuit.
Infused with a passion for vivid hues, bold strokes, and cultural symbolism, Susan’s artwork was a celebration of African heritage and identity. Her exploration of colour and form was not merely aesthetic but served as a conduit for conveying the essence of tradition and the diversity of human experience.
Driven by a deep-rooted commitment to social justice and human rights, Susan embarked on a remarkable educational journey. She earned a Certificate in Legal Studies from Birkbeck College at the University of London, followed by a BSc Hons in Human Rights & Social Anthropology from Roehampton University. Furthering her studies at the Institute of Education, she obtained an MA in Education, Gender & International Development.
Susan’s career path took shape amidst her pursuit of creativity and social impact. Her first job at Elizabeth Eaton, an Interior Design company in London, provided a foundation for her artistic aspirations. As a self-taught artist, she recognized the importance of aligning her career with her passion for creativity and self-expression.
Reflecting on her journey, Susan emphasized the invaluable lesson that it’s never too late to pursue one’s dreams. Despite facing challenges as a mature student, she embraced the wisdom gained from life experiences, recognizing the power of maturity and resilience in achieving personal and professional goals. Guided by the mantra “quitters never win and winners never quit,” Susan offered sage advice for success in her career field. She encouraged aspiring individuals to dream big and diligently prepare themselves to seize opportunities when they arise. For Susan, success was not merely a matter of chance but the result of meticulous preparation and unwavering determination.
Susan’s philanthropic spirit found expression through her artistic endeavours. She generously donated her paintings and greeting cards to various charitable causes, including Christian Aid and UNIFEM. Notably, she spearheaded an art auction to support Christian Aid’s Haiti Earthquake Appeal, exemplifying her dedication to using art as a catalyst for positive change.
Beyond her artistic pursuits, Susan’s professional endeavours mirrored her passion for social progress. With a background in leadership and program management, she dedicated herself to designing and implementing initiatives that uplifted marginalised communities, particularly youth, women, and persons with disabilities, across Africa. Her commitment to addressing barriers and fostering inclusivity underscored her belief in the inherent dignity and potential of every individual.
Susan Mensah’s life and work stand as a testament to the transformative power of art education and advocacy. Through her creative expression and unwavering dedication to social justice, she left an indelible mark on both the artistic landscape and the pursuit of a more equitable world. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those touched by her artistry and passion for positive change.. Her legacy continues to inspire and uplift those who follow in her footsteps.
